Reklamemanden Roger Thornhill mødes med et par kolleger på Plaza Hotel i New York til et par drinks. Her forveksles han med en George Kaplan og bortføres. Det lykkes dog Thornhill at flygte, men ingen tror på hans historie, og snart er han også eftersøgt for mord.
